I&#039;ve always regarded foot-binding as a not so subtle substitute for the ball and chain.
IMO japanese ladies did not practise it to any large extent and their usual footware were Geta, a little like flip-flops on stilts. Noisey like clip-clop, clip-clop. Kimonos encourage short steps and make running away a slow process doomed to failure while the clip-clop sound made tracking  easier if over hard ground. However, kimonos could be very expensive and really beautifying.
Maybe foot-binding originally reflected a male attitude towards women as kitchen and bed slaves.</description>
