Pet Shop Boys Won’t Change Band Name for PETA

April 10, 2009 / 3 Comments

In their own unique way that borders the realms of craziness, PETA has once again managed to attract the world’s attention to an issue that they feel is worth highlighting. Knowing how pop culture and big stars bring with them great publicity, the organization had requested Pet Shop Boys to change their name to Rescue Shelter Boys so that cruelty towards animals is reduced and adoption of pets is encouraged! Are we the only ones to thing they’re stupid AGAIN?

Not too surprisingly though, the band politely refused PETA Europe’s plea but noted that the cause was still worth highlighting.

PETA had suggested the name change stating that it would promote millions of the bands fans to consider giving a home to an abandoned or unwanted animal from an animal shelter. And with the news now hitting the tabloid, they might have achieved what they set out to do anyway!

So what is next in line? Asking Carcass to change its name to Butterflies and Bumblebees? In case you are wondering, yes, Rescue Shelter Boys is still an available band name for anyone who wishes to start a new band. You game? [via Ecorazzi]

I wouldn’t think I would see vegans beating a dead horse, but c’mon who’s next? Fine young cannibals, flock of seagulls, Blue Oyster Cult, Toad the wet sprocket. Should Modest Mouse become “Humble Hanta Host” Really, I think their are legitimate causes to pursue, but who will make a real ideological shift in ethics based on such seemingly vapid protest.

I never was a Pet Shop Boys fan (nothing wrong with the band they are very talented just wasn’t my type of music), but these guys are a successful band and PETA wants them to change their name, come on here? If they were to change their name, they might lose fans, have a drop in record sales, etc. Sounds like PETA is running out of options to promote protection of animals. I’m an animal lover myself and I would love it if never another animal was killed, that’s not the issue.
Hey PETA, why don’t you change your name MROOO, “Morons running out of options”< LOL
