The United States Senate has refused to throw out a $1-billion program intended to boost dwindling car sales in the US from a $106-billion war funding Bill. The Senate voted 60-36 to keep the program that would provide vouchers of up to $4,500 for consumers to trade in their less fuel-efficient cars for cars that give better mileage.

The emissions target scheme announced by Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev recently aims at slashing emissions by 10%-15% from Russia’s emissions in 1990 when the country was a part of the Soviet Union. At that time, Russia’s greenhouse-gas emissions were far higher than they are at present.

Nuclear-capable countries hastened to secure uranium deals. Nuclear-capable nations across the world are hurrying to make sure that they have long-term access to supplies of uranium. Many countries in Europe and Asia, including India and China, are in the race to lock in their supply of uranium in order to fuel several new reactors that they will build over the next decade.

Recently, a deal was struck between the Russia-based Rosatom, the state-owned producer of uranium, and the Canada-based producer Uranium One. Rosatom won a 17% stake in Uranium One as well as a long-term deal for supply in exchange for a half stake in the Karatau mine in Kazakhstan. Uranium One is also reportedly trying to close a 20% (worth $240-million) share sale and supply pact with Japan’s Toshiba Corporation, Tokyo Electric Power Company and Japan Bank for international Cooperation.
Never has a domestic train reached 140mph in Britain. All that changed today when the latest (Japanese imported) bullet train took a test run. Dubbed the Javelin, this train clocked 143mph on a test roll from London to Kent and back as the journey began from platform 13 at St Pancras.

In a regular routine the train would stop at Ebbsfleet -a journey of 17 minutes. For the test run though, it zipped straight to Ashford, covering 70 miles in 30 minutes and 40 seconds. The train promises to cut journey time from Ashford to Central London in half, covering it in 37 minutes.
Del Posto, the famous Italian restaurant in New York, has joined the line-up of several restaurants in the city of San Francisco and the state of New York that are steering clear of bottled water.

Here comes a new, lightweight, hydrogen-powered car that can attain speeds of up to 50 mph. The Riversimple Urban Car is a British two-seater that can travel a distance of up to 240 miles without re-fueling. The car, which only weighs 772 lbs and is expected to offer a 300 mpg autonomy, could be produced as early as 2013, according to a company’s spokesman.

The Riversimple Urban Car, unveiled at Somerset House in London, was developed over the last three years. It is the outcome of joint research by the River Simple development team founded by engineer Hugo Spowers, Oxford University, Cranfield University in Bedfordshire, and Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies.
