Capstone, a company that specializes in electricity-generating microturbines, have decided to team up with the Chief Creative Director at Electronic Arts, Richard Hilleman, to create a very interesting-looking hybrid car for the upcoming car show in Los Angeles. The CMT-380 is powered by an electric power train, with the addition of a diesel microturbine that can give the car enough power for 500 miles.

The car also uses a lithium polymer battery pack which alone can drive the car for 80 miles – solely on electricity. The body of the car is a kit platform, the Factory Five Racing GTM supercar. 0-60mph is reached in 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 150 mph. The microturbine has a notably efficient design, producing so little exhaust gases that no additional equipment like a catalytic converter is needed to meet California’s Air Resources Board emissions requirements.

Capstone have been making microturbines for about 20 years now, and the one used in the CMT-380 is actually their weakest model – its output is only 30 kW. According to Capstone, the microturbine offers many advantages over the standard internal combustion engine, such as better performance and efficiency, and lower maintenance requirements.
