Nissan have made a recent announcement, stating that their electric cars, as well as Renault’s, will see a doubled battery capacity by 2015. This probably means that the Leaf range will also get this upgrade, which is a great thing.
This increased capacity is attributed to only one change – switching over to NMC (lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide cathode) batteries. The batteries are apparently in final development stages, and after that it will be a short wait, as the production methods for the new type of battery will be quite similar to the ones the company is using now.
One thing that can be worrying about this is the presence of Cobalt in the battery – it’s quite an expensive material, but Nissan are reassuring us that a doubling in performance will not mean an equal change in the price.
A lot of other companies, not related to cares, are already experimenting with this type of battery in a lot of ways. These companies include Panasonic, Hitachi, Sanyo, Samsung, which is a sure sign that not only hybrid car drivers, but owners of various gadgets as well will enjoy increased performance in the near future.
