This three-level home in Powhatan, Virginia, has an environment friendly character, while looking much like any other home. Built by Handcraft Homes and designed by Watershed Architects, the home has been built with SIPs. The project is apparently filled with enough environment goodness to gun for a LEED Silver certification.
Features leading up to the above certification include a low footprint on cement piers, passive solar heating and cooling ventilation, energy recovery ventilator, a balance between natural and artificial lighting for the interiors, water efficient fixtures, a highly reflective roof, and zero VOC primers, coats and paints. All appliances in the house have the Energy Star logo on them.
As is clear with these features, nothing radical has been done to the house, it is just a good mixture of designing, common sense and a good use of available materials. It cost $280,000 to build, and that is more compared to what a “conventional” house would have been built for. The owner though, gets to live in a “green” home and hopes to recover the amount in seven years, and after that, the energy savings would be profit!
