Cargo ships are probably the cheapest and most efficient method to transport your cargo – and they also take considerably less energy per ton of cargo than most other methods. Still, the fuel used to power cargo ships is notoriously known as one of the dirtiest fuels in the world, and in fact cargo ships alone are known to contribute at least 3-4% of the world’s greenhouse gas.

Obviously, addressing this issue should be a major concern for those who wish to build a cleaner, greener world today, and it looks like B9 Energy may be close to providing a solution. They’re currently developing a zero-carbon emitting cargo ship, and are planning to put it on the market in 2012. The ship weighs only 3,000 tons, much smaller than your typical cargo ship, which normally fall in the 15,000-30,000 ton range.

The ship goes back to the roots of shipping technologies, using sails to provide 60% of the power required, with the other 40% coming from engines running on liquified methane. The ship also supports liquified natural gas as an alternate fuel.
