Japanese taxis are the cleanest, most modern, and the drivers are the most polite and service-oriented people you would get to meet. And, anyone would agree with the fact that electric vehicles have done much in promoting this culture of environmental sustainability, cleanliness and excellent service.
However the limitations of a fixed battery electric vehicles; short distance range and intermittent recharging, have always given a setback to large scale use of EV’s in transporting people from one part of the city to another.
Better Place an electric car company founded by Shai Agassi is seeking to develop a business model around EV’s by introducing three switchable-battery electric taxis in Tokyo on trial basis for 90 days. The electric cars would drive through battery switch stations, exchanging a depleted battery for a fully charged one, thereby allowing an EV to run continuously. One can buy a plan to gain access to this network of charging spots and battery switch stations.
Better Place model does show the way on how electric cars can be made economical.
