It seems that the US Armed Forces are making an all out effort to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels by opting for more sustainable forms of energy that are eco-friendly. Just a few days back the US Air Force set a green precedent by using bio-fuel to fly supersonic hornet. Giving yet another push to its green initiative the Air force has signed a $3.5 million contract with Lockheed Martin for the supply of shipping containers that are equipped with solar power generators.US Air Force bases to get portable solar power Lockheed Martin to supply US Air Force with solar power generators The idea is to reduce the fuel consumption and ease the logistics burden besides improving power availability by integrating a variety of energy sources, including renewable. The system intends to partly take over power loads when the primary grid is unavailable, supplementing conventional diesel generation with solar power. Such initiatives will definitely help the armed forces meet its target of generating 25 percent of all energy from renewable sources by 2025.
