The police force in the American city of New York has introduced the first hybrid patrol cars to come into the organization. The cars are Ford Fusion hybrid vehicles and were introduced on Wednesday. This is seen as the first step of the police fleet turns more eco-friendly.
As of now the force has 3,000 gas consuming Chevy Impalas patrolling the streets. There are also 76 Nissan Altima hybrids on the force, and these initial 30 Ford hybrids are the first instalment of a total of 102 Ford Fusion hybrids that will be joining the NYPD fleet.
The Mayor stated that the hybrid vehicles use less fuel and emit fewer pollutants into the air we breathe. The long term plan is to ensure that all the patrol cars are environment friendly vehicles in order to reduce the city’s carbon footprint by 30% by the year 2017.
According to EPA estimates, the Ford Fusion 41 miles per gallon – which is more than double the gas mileage of the Impala patrol car.
