Back to the Future car, Converted to Electric

In time for the 25th anniversary of the popular sci-fi movie ‘Back to the Future’, an all-electric DeLorean DMC-12 will going around the roads of Italy. Wired Italy, who are big fans of the movie collaborated with open source car conversion experts from eCars Now!Italy to create the vehicle. Technically speaking, the electric car is not ready yet – what the group has now is a DeLorean from Dallas and a turnkey electric car conversion kit – including a 90 kW engine and custom designed Lithium-ion batteries that fit the DMC-12 perfectly.

Custom batteries were sourced from South Korea and shipped to Germany, where they were molded into a more DeLorean-friendly shape.

In the coming week, the team will put together all the arts and document the process on their website. First the electric ingredients will go into the vehicle, and the engine will be started for the first time on the 12th of this month.

The group is confident of surmounting any electrical problems; the only aspect that concerns them is the mechanics – since the car is a rare 28-year-old one.

After the car goes through testing, it will head out from the office of Wired Italy and drive through the country roads heading for Rome, where it intends to be part of the Rome Film Festival. En route are ‘Back to the Future’ marathons sponsored by Universal Pictures in towns that the car has pit stops at.

The three-day trip to Rome will bypass highways completely, to ensure that as many people as possible get to take in an eyeful of this amazing vehicle.

An added advantage is that the team will get to enjoy the pastoral Italian landscape in a vehicle that has a silent electric motor.

Recharging will happen when the team stops for lunch, safe in the knowledge that a major Italian electric company will be sponsoring them.

Ending the journey at Rome is a deliberate part of the plan – the city is one of many that only allow homebrew EV conversions to be registered as prototypes. The team expects that hardcore fans of the movie will be aghast at the conversion that has been done on the car.

They hope that a future project making this kind of an exercise and trip into a race involving bizarre electric cars will turn the tables in their favor.
