Mark O’Brien put himself in different shoes and literally thought out of the box. The UK. artist, who describes himself a “crazy cardboard craftsman’’ and heads the Manchester-based MOB Cardboard, recycles corrugated beer crates into three-dimensional sculptures, including ersatz men’s shoes. The shoes appear so realistic that people got easily fooled. Though any unusual material ignites his imagination, cardboard remains his medium of choice because of its innate ability to grab attention.
The designer, a graduate from Leeds Metropolitan University, with a degree in graphics art, has excellent sense of humor, to boot. Many of the shoes are modeled after footwear designs O’Brien loves, but can’t afford!
O’Brien says that the strength of using cardboard is that it’s accessible and familiar to everyone; so people see objects made out of it.
The future plans for MOB Cardboard include a studio space where O’Brien plans to conduct recycled-material workshops that will engage others with art and design while passing on a message of sustainability.
