For the first time in its history, the Japanese automaker Toyota is going to manufacture vehicles in Europe and import them to the US. Announcing the move,Toyota said that it will manufacture the Yaris models with specs for US and Canada in its facility in Onnaing-Valenciennes, France.
This plant, originally scheduled to produce cars for the European markets, has been manufacturing the hatchback variant of Yaris since 2001.
The Yaris models for the US and Canada are slightly different from the versions meant for Europe. North American models feature automatic transmission.
They come with a market-specific four-cylinder 1.5-liter engine. Also, different fascia designs have been used in the front and rear parts of models.
The move is part of Toyota’s strategies to cut down the production in Japan. This is because the company has been incurring loss on export of vehicles after the production processes in Japan.
