In order to tackle the urban heat island effects, New York has been promoting green tops all through the city. But the city of Zhuzhou in Hunan, China has taken the idea of green roofs a step further by developing villas atop a green roof shopping mall.
Zhuzhou has been engaged in a mission of greening its infrastructure after it was selected as a national-level garden city in 2008. These roof top villas can be considered as one of the greatest achievements of the city. Four two-story villas sit at opposite corners of the five-story mall. They are approximately 500 square metersin size. These houses were designed by Zhuzhou Jiutian Real Estate. In order to look like villas, the developer combined modern designs with landscape decorations. This creative rooftop significantly points to the creative utilization of the existing real estate in expensive localities.
The houses atop the Jiutian International Square mall will be used as offices for employees of the mall’s real estate developer. This innovative concept realizes the dream of promoting more green space to residents in highly urban areas. The green tops will help advance the quality of life and surroundings. Also it is expected that introducing foliage to the rooftop will help cool urban areas.
The largest “living roof” in the world sits on top of the Ford Motor Company’s Rouge Manufacturing Plant in Dearborn, Michigan. It was designed by environmental architect William Mcdonough.
