British couple Peter Root and Mary Thompson who had been touring the world on their bicycle was killed in a road accident on Wednesday. Their lifelong dream come to an end when both of them were hit by a pickup truck in a province east of Bangkok, Thailand. The trip was their longtime dream and the couple had saved money for six years to make it happen.
Hailing from Guernsey in the Channel Islands, they left Britain in July 2011 and had cycled through Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and China. Both experienced cyclists, they were well aware of the risks and challenges in undertaking such a venture.
They had been posting photos and details of their trip including videos of journey through deserts, hills and rivers. They have been documenting their journey through the website Two on Four Wheels and had many followers on Twitter and Facebook. They also traveled through remote parts of Central Asia and also cycled through armed conflict in Tajikistan.
The couple’s film on their adventurous trip ‘Cycling Central Asia’ was chosen by the 11th Annual Filmed by Bike Film Festival 2013, to be held in Portland this April. The organizers were planning for a video tribute to the young couple when their film is exhibited.
