Both the teams will try their best to put the best foot forward as they plane for the next 12 months and think about sorting out the squads for the world cup.

For the English side, the loss of Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and Graeme Swann and the horrendous tour Down Under means that their ODI side needs a fresh start against the subcontinent Lions.

While Alastair Cook, Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara, and Jos Buttle form the core of the English side, they will look towards others in the squad to cement their place over the next few months.

Even though England has had little ODI success recently, home conditions and a swinging white ball should make them the favorites ahead of the first encounter.

As far as the visitors go, the high of the T20 world cup win might be just starting to wear off, but Sri Lanka still have both Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara to terrorize oppositions world over in the 50-over format.

Both would love to have an amazing last English trip as they try and get rid of the “flat track bullies” tag.

Both James Tredwell and James Anderson will be under the scanner as the series goes on, with England trying to pick the best squad for the Aussie challenge down the line.

Expect the Oval pitch to grip and offer a little bit of help to the Lankan tweakers in the later half of the day.

England Possible Lineup: 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Ian Bell, 3 Michael Carberry, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan , 6 Ravi Bopara 7 Jos Buttler, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 James Tredwell, 11 James Anderson.
