Retail giant Wal-mart has announced massive greenhouse gas emission cuts from its global supply chain. In an effort to go green, the company will reduce 20 million metric tons of emissions by 2015. The larger goal of Wal-mart, as the company puts it, is to only use renewable energy and create zero waste.

Danish shipping conglomerate Maersk has found an easy way to save money by saving fuel, and drastically reducing its environment footprint; all by slowing down a bit. It is conventional wisdom that moving at optimum speeds can improve fuel efficiency, but when you’re a shipping company, the most common way is to move at full throttle so that you deliver the cargo as fast as possible, it’s just business. And that is where Maersk scored.

Christmas trees are decked and decorated for the big day, and after that, they are mostly discarded and left away. Obviously, there can be better use for these green trees, the best option being to let them grow and be put to use again.

Many countries in the world currently offer incentives towards production of green energy, and the said incentives are gradually increasing. Germany, which has registered a strong growth in the sector and meets nearly 15% of electricity demand with green energy, is now planning to reduce incentives given to solar power.

As the world moves to cleaner energy, demand for Lithium has been steadily increasing. The element has widespread application in batteries and is widely used in consumer products and electric cars. Since the demand for Lithium is likely to only go up in the future, as the number of electric cars and gadgets steadily increases, there is a scare about insufficient sources, which may not even last very long into the future. Moreover, the conventional process of sourcing lithium is very water intensive, and that of course isn’t a good thing. The situation though, may be quite different with the new process developed by Simbol Mining.

An American Acryl facility near Seabrook, Texas reported a huge explosion in the morning at about 8:50 am local time. The explosion at the chemical plant set off a huge plume of smoke into the atmosphere, while some eyewitnesses also claim to have seen a “ball of fire going up in the air.” Fortunately, no one was seriously harmed or injured in the Seabrook Explosion, and firefighters appear to have brought the fire in control in about an hour as no smoke was seen at the explosion site by that time.

Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning LLC has a very ambitious project in its hands. The huge $240 million project aims to cool the hot Hawaiian city with frigid cold water brought from the ocean’s depth. Aimed for Honolulu’s downtown area, the project will supposedly help reduce the city’s air conditioning electric usage by 75%, while also substantially lowering the use of harmful and ozone depleting refrigerants.

The vast expanse of the Sahara desert has since long been seen as an available source of solar energy that can be tapped. However, there isn’t much progress to show on the issue. Now the idea seems closer to reality with a German-led consortium of 12 companies that intends to harness the desert sun to power Europe.
