Okay we need to say it out loud. We don’t know for sure if Mayor Michael Bloomberg is actually a vegetarian, but if the New York Post has it right, he probably is. Apparently after visiting the Brooklyn Navy Yard last week, Michael Bloomberg went for a feast at Morton’s Steakhouse in downtown Brooklyn. And what a feast! Onion soup, broccoli and grilled asparagus! He did sample the treats, but refrained from eating any meat and was “strictly vegetarian.” Would that make New Yorkers happier … ? [via Ecorazzi]

In their own unique way that borders the realms of craziness, PETA has once again managed to attract the world’s attention to an issue that they feel is worth highlighting. Knowing how pop culture and big stars bring with them great publicity, the organization had requested Pet Shop Boys to change their name to Rescue Shelter Boys so that cruelty towards animals is reduced and adoption of pets is encouraged! Are we the only ones to thing they’re stupid AGAIN?

Not too surprisingly though, the band politely refused PETA Europe’s plea but noted that the cause was still worth highlighting.

PETA had suggested the name change stating that it would promote millions of the bands fans to consider giving a home to an abandoned or unwanted animal from an animal shelter. And with the news now hitting the tabloid, they might have achieved what they set out to do anyway!

So what is next in line? Asking Carcass to change its name to Butterflies and Bumblebees? In case you are wondering, yes, Rescue Shelter Boys is still an available band name for anyone who wishes to start a new band. You game? [via Ecorazzi]

Cricket is a unifying religion in India, a nation of vast religious and cultural diversities and Sachin Tendulkar its undisputed demigod. The greatest modern batsman the game has ever seen— and a man carrying a billion hopes and expectations every time he walks out to the center, has come out for the first time in support of the Tiger Conservation Program in the country.

Tendulkar dedicated his brilliant innings of 160 to the cause of Tiger Conservation and asked people to help restore the habitat of a vanishing Tiger. So why is one sportsperson’s call out to the people of one nation to save the Tiger that significant? He told the media that at the start of the century there were nearly 40,000 tigers in India, which were now reduced to 17,000. He compared the situation to his time in school when he was told there were once dinosaurs and hoped we dint have to tell future generations about tigers the same way.

With the savvy media already picking up on the issue in a big way and youngsters talking about it, this probably is the most meaningful step towards tiger conservation in India taken in a long, long time!

Star-power and celebrity endorsement of a green and planet-friendly cause always help propel it into spotlight, but Sachin Tendulkar is much beyond a ‘star’ in the region. He has been a model ambassador for the sport for 20 years that he has played, has stayed on the pinnacle of the sport for all those years and most importantly is one individual whose words are repeated by the media a million times over and taken to heart by everyone who is both a fan of the game and otherwise.

The Indian Cricket Team has officially endorsed the tiger conservation campaign on its tour to New Zealand and even has a poster on its dressing room that says ‘Extinction is forever’.

We’re game!

First of all, do you know who “The Bunny Butcher” is?

Well, if you thought of Donna Karan, you’re right, because that’s how PETA used to call her.

I’m using past tense, because the famous fashion designer announced that the fall 2009 collection will be fur-free and that future lines will also be fur-free. Even though we’re not fans of what PETA does, it sure sounds like a good direction to be heading to.

We’re genuinely happy because it looks like a great victory for animals, but I’m really skeptical about keeping her hands off fur. Plus, what’s she going to do, use more synthetic fabrics made of petroleum-based fibers?

Meanwhile, congrats to Donna Karan. – via Ecorazzi

The Miss Earth 2008 Competition is happening in Manila, where 85 beauties from around the world are declaring their campaigns for a ‘green lifestyle.’

Asia has some of their best – Miss China Zhou Yingkun, 22. Miss Macau Qian Wei Na, 22, Miss Thailand Piya Porn (her real name) Deejing, 20, Miss Singapore Ivy Leow Kian Peng, 25, Miss Philippines Karla Henry, 22, Miss Taiwan Tsai Yin Yin, 19 and Miss India Tanvi Vyas, 22.

I don’t know if you think these girls and their display of unity for a green lifestyle motivates you think green thoughts, but I sure like looking, um, thinking about it at their expense. At least they are not the PETA girls.

That may be a weird title, but there’s something behind. Leonardo di Caprio and the guys at DeclareYourself.com came out with a video where most of the Hollywood celebrities tell you to go register and vote if you care about your country. If you care about the education system, welfare, the minimum wage, women’s rights, civil rights, the economy but also the environment, climate change and much more things related with what we do here on GreenPacks.

Therefore, don’t vote unless you don’t care, but register and vote if you do care. Not a bad initiative, what do you think? Are you registered?

Mr Clean - Mr ProperCleanliness is next to godliness. A green world is a godly concept, too. In that regard, House Peters, Jr, Mr. Clean, did his part to make the world a better place for 92-years. He died yesterday.

At GreenPaks we want our world to not just be green, but also cleaner, healthier and a friendlier place for animals.

Peters was an actor, as well as a commercial star for Procter & Gamble. But, what he really taught us is that cleanliness is indeed a better way of life. That means ridding the world of pollution, too, no?

Ed Westwick and Drew Barrymore are making their contribution to global climate change. The celeb blogosphere is going volcanic with news of the two hanging out and well, doing other PG-rated things…that we know of. Maybe more. Steamy, hot…and other such passionate words are being tossed about regarding a recent make out session between the 21-year old star and 33-year old star.

Truthfully, I don’t know about those things. What I do know, is that Barrymore has a passion for making the world a better place. Barrymore gets it. She worked with the World Food Program and made trips to Africa to document the goings on there. (more…)
