The US has what it takes, but it cannot alter the laws of Physics. You have not defined 'zero-emissions'. If a battery passes current then it must be 'emitting' power. Even if you allow for non-carbon power sources to charge the battery, no battery exists which is 100% efficient (because some power is consumed within the battery).
 So good-luck America!

I wonder how much the setup of American cities also affects the desirability of this - I would think that a high speed rail link between Dallas and Houston would be a fairly obvious one too, for instance, but getting around in Dallas without a car is rather tricky. Add the annoyance of booking a rental car, picking it up, making sure that it's fully fueled before you return it, and the hassle free train becomes less simple. The fact that cities were built with cars in mind, and without consideration for public transport means that some of the advantages gained in Europe cannot happen here. As to the question of the US being too large, that seems peripheral. The entire article seems to focus on links between specific cities, and there are a fair few large ones in close proximity in the US.

At one time, Denver Colorado USA had a plan for a runway that was sloped such that the planes would land and run uphill, and would run down hill to take off. This was on a Popular Science (or was that Pop. Mechanics?) cover over 30 years ago. Would that not also save energy, by using gravity to assist the plane in taking off?

No matter how much attention is put on the price of gas it will still be high, at least higher by $1.50 over last year. Hybrids and other bio fuels will take a while to get into the main stream and are not replacing the millions of cars we have on the road tomorrow that run on gas and diesel. In my ideal world gas would be the same price as it is in Argentina, 12 cents a gallon, but it's not. So I decided to cruise the web looking how to stop the bleeding and beating my walet takes everytime I pull up to the pump. Check out this site I found, http://www.gasbankusa.com. The site talks about locking in a fixed price for gas. An interesting idea and good concept as long as gas doesn't go down in price but I am not holding my breath for that to happen. GasBankUSA acctually looks like a pretty good solution to save on gas.

There is zero, nada, zippo, nothing you can do about the price of gas.... or is there? I'm not sure how your crystal ball see's future gas prices but I have to say, my magic 8 ball keeps saying, "try again later". Here is a site I came across that could make a difference. The site is GasBankUSA located at http://www.gasbankusa.com and discusses fixed price gasoline and locking in a price even if gas goes up.
