Jaguar Land Rover’s plans to build a green Range Rover will get a vital boost from the British government who decided to allot a funding of £27 million.

The prestigious green project will receive the funding as a part of the government’s plan to promote eco-friendly automobiles that lead the nation towards a greener future. This is in addition to the already granted £2.3bn that is a part of the automotive assistance program meant to support the ailing car industry in the difficult times.

Based on the Land Rover’s LRX Concept car that has been unveiled a year ago at the Detroit Auto Show, the green car of the future will be the most energy-efficient and clean Range Rover ever. Being projected as the ultimate culmination of style, performance and planet-friendly technology, the ‘green’ Range Rover is a prestigious £400 million venture where the government is willing to share just over 5% of total costs.

“Despite the current economic challenges we remain committed to investing for the future” said Phil Popham, Land Rover’s managing director.

Investment in a greener future and cleaner roads is what this is all about and considering the current global financial crisis, this is great news for automobile industry in general and Jaguar in particular.

Automobile industry has taken plenty of slack over the decades about how it has been spewing tons of pollutants into the atmosphere causing air quality to gone down to deplorable levels. For that reason most of the manufacturers embraced the ‘green way’. And designers started drawing so here’s an amazing concept car, dubbed Green Apple.

Designed by Julien Sarremejean and unveiled at the Local Motors competition it’s a NYC-centric car, that features an accessible battery pack, an air intake system that can revolutionize the way we drive cars today and a space-conscious design that makes it perfect for big city life. Unlike traditional air intake systems this one sucks air in and twirl a set of small windmills that purify air.

Green Apple is a new concept that could change the whole perception of a zero-emissions car. If you can purify the same amount of air that comes out of the exhausts, then it relatively means you are causing no pollution at all. If ever built, such a futuristic idea (both tech and design) is a sure hit, so there shouldn’t be any reasons why it cannot be the blueprint for future eco-friendly vehicles. No? [via Inhabitat]

The Aptera Typ-1 Concept Car is a three-wheeled vehicle. The two front wheels are used for steering and the rear wheel is connected to an electric motor. The Typ-1 will consume 60-80 Watt·hours/km at 55 mph (90 km/h), making it a low energy vehicle.

The Typ-1 has a drag coefficient of 0.11, compared with 0.19 for the record-holding EV1.

It has recessed windshield wipers, low rolling resistance tires, and cameras in place of side mirrors. And, did we say it goes 300 miles on a gallon of gas?

m-112 car concept

Looking at the new M-112, a compact economical car that recently participated in the Shell Eco Marathon 2008 in France, I’m pretty sure there are big chances it will be an inspiration for cars we’re going to drive in 5 – 10 years. Large cities will get even more crowded and I don’t even want to think what those traffic jams will be like unless, of course, we build suspended cities or develop flying cars.

M-112 - The (Eco) Urban Concept Car

Designed by Ignacio Garcia, the M-112 is a real concept car not just a prototype. Elegantly tiny and packing an ecological engine under the hood (really has one?) I’m pretty certain the one seater futuristic go-kart will turn heads when you make a trip to the city center.

I wonder if it’s expensive, because I’d definitely want to drive one.
