Did you know that Giant pandas have fun, too? Just like little childs. But check out this black and white fellow who failed to slide the board in the cutest possible way.

We love animals at Greenpacks. We love pandas at Greenpacks. What could possibly be better than one animal, or one panda? How about a whole parade of pandas?! Good grief, and we thought that the pandas were about to go extinct! No way! Paris is being invaded by the chubby fellows … some 1600 of them.

The paper mache pandas were set up by the World Wildlife Fund and put on “the Parvis des droits de l’Homme at Paris Trocadero esplanade.” The significance of the number 1,600 – it’s the estimated population of the number of pandas remaining. WWF wants us to do our part to reverse the deterioration of our natural environment, thus, endangering our friends. We’re in! – via Xinhuanet

Olympic Pandas Born in China

Qi Zhen When She Was Born

Anything born between 8/8/8 and the end of the Olympics in China will be dubbed “Olympic-whatever.” In fact, not a few parents scheduled to have their children on 8/8/8 come hell or high water.  Apparently Qi Zhen (Magic Treasure) couldn’t be fitted in on China’s most auspicious of days and had to wait till Sunday – 8/10. Still, her twin cubs are considered Olympic Pandas.  Huan Huan weighed in 98 grams and Bei Bei is still being protected by her mother.

Qi Zhen’s twin sister, Qi Yuan (Magic Luck) had twins earlier in the year. Giant Pandas are notoriously sexually inactive. That coupled with a shrinking habitat and the animals are among the world’s most endangered. There are only about 1,500 pandas living in the wild. There are 75 at the center in Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Center including these two newcomers.

I wonder…what if we just left them alone. What do you think would happen?

Not All is Happy in Panda Land

Tuesday

Even if there are new pandas on the block born after the earthquake, not all is happy in panda land. It appears that three giant pandas are suffering from post-quake trauma. In a simple incident where a zookeeper tried to hand a bowl of milk to one panda, the metal bowl dropped and crashed making a loud noise and scaring the panda and two buddies away. It’s been a week, and the pandas are still, uncharacteristically, afraid of the zookeeper and his bowl.

Mei Qian and Qian Qian still need time to heal from the trauma inflicted by the 8.0-magnitude quake it is thought. The bears’ home was damaged during the quake. The three lived with 150 other pandas in the Wolong nature reserve. Six pandas went missing during the quake and one was found dead. Perhaps had the pandas not been confined to the preserve, they would have sensed the quake and went for safety. Did anyone consider that?

The three depressed and frightened pandas, all female, were found in a tree. They have been moved twice, once to escape the ongoing aftershocks. The pandas took their clumsy zookeeper with them to southern China’s Kunming. In Kunming, the playful bears still are frightened by thunder. Caretakers pat them and call them tender names to calm them down.

Okay, I’m afraid, too. Can some cute caretaker come take care of me, please?
